Even though billions of people are writing something on their computers every day, surprisingly there are not many grammar checker tools available online. Many people know about Grammarly or ProWritingAid, which are becoming a synonym for checking texts in English. However, many users find them expensive, so it’s definitely worth checking alternatives.

Today, I am reviewing Linguix, a grammar tool that will help you check spelling, grammar, punctuation, style, and plagiarism. Before going into details, let me give you a little spoiler – it’s definitely worth investing a couple of minutes into reading about it, as I have found it to be a great solution for beginners.

Detailed Linguix review

Who should use the Linguix grammar tool?

Linguix is a tool created for anyone who needs to check their text online. Whether it’s an online document or email, Linguix will automatically check what you write and suggest how to improve your text. It can help both beginners and professionals to improve their English content.

However, if you need to frequently check for plagiarism, do note that every check will use one paid credit. In this case, I strongly suggest Grammarly, because it will let you check as many texts for plagiarism as you wish at no extra charge.

Is Linguix easy to use?

Linguix has a modern website that connects the sleek visuals into their user experience. Creating an account is as easy as typing in your email address and desired password.

Immediately after entering your details, Linguix will ask you about the purpose of your writing, and will also ask you to select a couple of areas where you need help when creating content. Nothing too fancy here, but it’s quite nice to see that you can personalize their service from the very start.

purpose of your writing

Their dashboard hasn’t disappointed me so far. As soon as I opened it, it was easy to understand. The entire interface is clean and minimalistic, and the first impression was kind of familiar. I could be wrong, but it reminds me of Google services (which is quite a compliment).

The Dashboard allows you to quickly access all of the settings, documents, statistics, and other modules available.

How to use Linguix

There are several ways of accessing the Linguix’s services. No matter which one you choose, you can be certain that Linguix will help you with your content.

Documents – check your content in the online editor

If you are starting to work on a new article that you want to check for grammar and spelling, you will want to open Lunguix’s online editor. It will allow you to start writing in a distraction-free environment where the entire focus is placed on the text that you’re writing. Alternatively, you can paste your content from another source. Unfortunately, there’s no way of uploading existing documents that you have stored in other formats. I hope that they add this feature in the future.

The entire Documents interface continues with the same style. It’s very minimalistic and modern-looking, which allows you to focus only on the text you’re working on.

You can organize the documents into folders, create new ones or delete the articles you no longer need. There’s even a demo document waiting for you when you first open the interface that will show you how Linguix can help you with your future writing endeavors.

All mistakes found in your document will be underlined, so that you can easily hover your cursor over them. This action will reveal a menu that will show you all of the available options. You will get suggestion(s) about how to correct your grammar or spelling mistakes, as well as options to dismiss the suggestion or add it to a dictionary in case this is something you want to keep in the same format whenever you write.

This option will be more than enough for short texts and quick fix-ups. But for larger and more important documents, you will want to open the “Helper” – an AI service that will reveal more information about your mistakes. It will let you see the statistics of your document, and establish the audience for your document. As you can imagine, there will be different suggestions available, depending on if you’re writing for a general audience or for academic purposes.

You can also set the tone of your document, and instruct the Helper to guide you in writing a document that will sound more calming, for example, or add excitement. After these options, you will have a list of flagged words, grammar, redundancy, style, typography, and typos. You can quickly go through each notation, and fix any problems by accepting the tool’s suggestions.

Browser extension will help you directly with your online work

Sometimes, you might need help while working on a website open in your browser without having to copy and paste the content to the Editor. Luckily, Linguix comes with a browser extension that will let you do just that.

As soon as you install the extension, it will start watching what you write online. For example, if you open your Gmail account, you will find a small icon in the lower-right corner of your email in progress. It will automatically underline your mistakes just like in the Document editor, and offer suggestions that will improve your emails. I especially enjoyed Linguix’s snippet feature which is especially useful when writing emails. It will offer you templates for different situations.

For example, if you need help creating cold emails, just select the appropriate template, and modify it with your copy. You can also write your own snippets, and have them ready at your fingertips.

The extension works really fast, and the icon is never intrusive. That means that you can relax while working on whatever website or online service you want, and still let the AI service examine your work.

Secret Mode will let you check your work incognito

While it is great that you can have all of your online documents checked and stored forever, sometimes you do not want to keep a specific article or email content saved to your account. Maybe you’re writing some unique content that you do not want to leak out or simply do not want your colleague to be able to stumble upon your new email. That’s where the Secret Mode comes in.

secret mode

Just as Chrome allows you to browse incognito, this Secret mode will let you check and fix your document without saving any actions. If this option is selected, Linguix will automatically delete all of your content as soon as you’re done with it, not leaving any traces.

Add words to your personal dictionary

No matter how good Linguix is, it is simply not possible for it to meet all of your needs. Here’s a perfect example – if you write “FirstSiteGuide” in your document, the tool will recognize it as a mistake. This makes sense as Linguix doesn’t know that this is the name of our business. To the software, it seems like I am missing spaces between these common English words.

In this case, I just had to open the Dictionary, and let Linguix know that I am not making a mistake when writing “FirstSiteGuide”. Once added, the AI service will never again underline the phrases added to the dictionary.

This feature is very simple, yet quite powerful. Once you start adding words, it will become something that you cannot live without.

The plagiarism detector

In a partnership with Copyleaks, Liguix will let you quickly check your document against billions of online text. Whether one paragraph or an entire document is copied, the tool will show you the plagiarised content and identify the source.

Unfortunately, the Plagiarism checker isn’t free nor is it included in the license that you pay for. In order to use it, you will have to buy credits. The smallest package will give you ten credits for $10, which means that you can check up to 2500 words ten times.

While it does work well, it requires regular credit upgrades if you decide to check your articles regularly.

Yes, Linguix lets you install a browser extension that can check your text anywhere you write online. The extension is non-intrusive, yet very helpful, especially when it comes to writing emails on Gmail or any other online email service.

Linguix is one of the best online grammar checker tools available, which makes it a great alternative to Grammarly. I found it very easy to use and especially loved the cleanliness of the interface and the document editor.

As a long-time Grammarly user, I can say it is quite obvious that Linguix’s designers did use Grammarly as their starting point (a more polite way than saying that they copied Grammarly’s editor). But this does mean that everything looks and operates nicely.

The tool works fast and most of the time quite accurately. However, I didn’t like the fact that the Plagiarism checker requires extra payments. If you’re going to check a lot of documents for plagiarism, Grammarly is a much more affordable option. On the other hand, it’s quite a powerful substitute for the popular Grammarly, so I strongly recommend giving it a try.
